Can Seniors Have A Sex Life While Hosting Holiday House Guests?
December 24, 2021
(I normally publish blog posts on Sunday morning. I’m publishing this one early to be in time for the Holidays)
Holiday Guests in Your Home?
During the holidays, many of the seniors in our age-restricted community have their children or grandchildren as house guests during the holiday season. Occasionally it’s only for a few days, but often it’s for a week or longer.
You might need to make some modifications to ensure privacy, but it is possible to still have a sex life while hosting holiday guests
I can’t help but wonder; do those with house guests suppress all sexual activity while they have family in their homes, or do they find ways to express their desire for each other? Does sex have to stop when there are house guests?
I’m writing this article to encourage single seniors and coupled seniors to continue their sex lives while they have guests in their homes. You might need to make some modifications to ensure privacy, or have sex at different times than typical, but there are options available.
How Seniors can Stay Sexy While Hosting Holiday Visitors
1. Ensure Privacy
Privacy is the primary need seniors have to continue their sexual life with house guests present. That privacy is necessary not only to keep grandchildren from walking in when you’re in the midst of lovemaking, but also if you’re dressing in your bedroom or nude after bathing.
Privacy is the primary need seniors have to continue their sexual life with house guests present.
If you’re planning a sexual rendezvous, be sure it’s in a location with a door lock and use it. Fortunately, most bedrooms have doors with locks, as do bathrooms. These are two excellent locations for sex.
I suggest that you make your bedroom an “off-limits” room at all times for visiting grandchildren. Make sure they understand they are to stay out of the bedroom. Ensure privacy by locking the door when appropriate.
2. Limit Noise
In addition to physical privacy, you’ll also want to limit the noise you make during sexual encounters. It can be embarrassing for you and your guests if your “private” activities are obvious from the sounds.
If you tend to be loud during sex, you’ll need to make some adjustments. Moan into a pillow or a blanket. Turn on the TV, radio, or a music player to help cover the sounds of sexual activity.
It can be embarrassing for you and your guests if your activities are obvious from the sounds.
If you use sex toys like vibrators, pick one that is quieter rather than louder. If the headboard bangs against the wall, stuff a pillow behind it. Lay some blankets on the floor and have quiet sex there If the bed is noisy because the springs make noise or the bed otherwise creaks.
The master bath shower can be an excellent location for sex. Locked doors to the bedroom and bathroom provide security. The noise of the shower will mask most of the sounds of having sex.
3. Pick a Good Time
When you have house guests, some time frames work better for sex than others. You might decide to stay home and “rest” when your guests want to spend a couple of hours shopping, or visit a local park. An empty home gives you the opportunity to do whatever you wish.
Mornings might be a good time for sex. Grandchildren might be sleeping in or busy watching TV. Michael Breus, the author of The Power of When, argues that for most people the morning is actually the optimal time for most people to have sex.

Bedtime might also be a good time. Most people understand that “old people like to go to bed early,” so excusing yourselves to the bedroom at an earlier hour isn’t likely to arouse suspicion.
Displays of Affection
If you usually give each other displays of affection in your home, don’t stop just because you have kids and grandkids present. It’s fine to give each other hugs, kisses, hold hands, or loving pats on the butt. Of course, there are limits to what are appropriate displays of affection.
Don’t be afraid to show appropriate displays of affection with your partner in front of your kids or grandkids.
I believe it’s important for seniors to model such affectionate behavior for children and grandchildren. It’s not sex, and there’s no need to hide it. By modeling such behavior, you’re teaching the upcoming generations that affection between people who love each other is a good and proper thing. You’re also helping to dispel the cultural myth that seniors are sexless.
Having a “Very Merry Christmas” While You Host Visitors in Your Home
Unless you have no privacy at all, it is not necessary to stop having sex with your partner just because you have children and grandchildren as guests in your home during the holidays. You can still have a “very Merry Christmas” as long as you make some adjustments.
Ensure privacy and minimize noise by:
- Locking doors to the bedroom or bathroom
- Eliminate or minimize sounds during sex by putting blankets on the floor if you have a noisy bed, using quiet sex toys, and moaning into a pillow
- Play a TV or music as background sound
- Running a shower as background noise or having sex in the shower
Decide which times are the best for having a sexual connection. For some that might be in the morning, for others at bedtime. Take advantage of times when your company is out of the home shopping or engaging in other activities.
Don’t be afraid to show appropriate displays of affection with your partner in front of your kids or grandkids. They both need positive models of what it looks like to have an affectionate, loving relationship.
Continue to enjoy your sexy relationship during the holidays! With a little thought, you can continue your sexual life even when you have house guests.
