A Favorite Sex Position — Woman From Behind, or “Doggy”

Although many couples enjoy the looking-into-each-others-eyes intimacy of the missionary position, the woman-from-behind, or Doggy position is also very popular. It’s one of our favorites.

Both men and women enjoy this position, and it ranks in the top two or three sex positions in surveys. There are many good reasons for its popularity.

7 Advantages of the Doggy Position

The Doggy position has several advantages:

1. In the Doggy position, the man can achieve deeper penetration. For the most part, he controls the depth of penetration and the speed and type of movement, although the woman can also move. Women who enjoy being deeply penetrated will find Doggy very pleasurable.

2. The man’s deep penetration in Doggy provides more G-Spot stimulation for the woman. G-Spot stimulation can result in “deep” orgasms that feel different from clitoral orgasms. Many women find them extremely enjoyable. By stimulating her clitoris with her fingers or a vibrator at the same time as receiving G-Spot stimulation, it’s possible for a woman to experience a clitoral and G-Spot orgasm at the same time.

3. With her looking in the opposite direction, a woman can fantasize more freely about who she is having sex with. Many women fantasize about being with other partners when having Doggy sex. This increases their arousal and pleasure in the position.

4. Doggy gives the man the opportunity to act in a more dominant sexual role. He’s in control. He can grab her hips as he thrusts in and out of her. Likewise, he can pound her hard from the back and deeply penetrate her. If she likes it, he can slap her butt or pull her hair back as he takes her from the back. It’s a very dominant-feeling act to pull her arms back and hold her wrists at the small of her back as you thrust inside her.

5. Just as Doggy gives a man the opportunity to act out a dominant role, it also gives the woman the opportunity to act out a submissive role. Many women desire to be taken sexually by a dominant, passionate man. Having a “faceless” man grab her hips and thrust hard, maybe pull her hair or slap her bottom, can trigger that role and give her the sense that a man desires her so much he loses control.

6. In the Doggy position, a man can stimulate a woman’s clitoris or breasts at the same time he is penetrating her. He can reach down between her legs to stroke her clitoris, or lean over to fondle or hold her breasts.

7. Men enjoy a visual feast while taking a woman from the back. It’s a turn-on for a man to see his partner’s bottom, hips, and back while having sex with her. It’s visually exciting for a man to watch his penis moving in and out of the woman while at the same time feeling pleasurable sensations.

8. Doggy can be a comfortable position for anal sex. In this position, the woman’s anus is easily accessible. The man can stimulate the anal opening with his fingers. Or, he can penetrate her anus with a finger while penetrating her vagina with his penis. Many women enjoy the feeling of fulness from being double penetrated at the same time. If she enjoys anal intercourse, he can insert his penis.

6 Variations in the Doggy Position

In the standard Doggy position, the woman gets on all fours and faces away from her partner. The man approaches from the back, kneeling between or outside her legs.

But that’s not the only way to do it. There are other common variations that you might enjoy:

1. Instead of the woman being up on all fours, the woman can lower her shoulders and face on the bed with her arms outstretched in front of her. This changes the angle of penetration and results in different sensations. It’s also a way to take most of the weight off her arms and wrists, making her more comfortable.

2. A woman can stimulate herself with her fingers or a vibrator while being penetrated from the back. Or, the man can stimulate her with his fingers or a toy.

3. The woman can lay down on her stomach while the man kneels with his knees either on the outside or inside of her legs. The man can also lay down on the woman’s back and move inside her as he would in the missionary position. If the woman closes her legs together, it gives the man increased stimulation since it tightens her vagina and her inside thighs also stimulate his penis as he moves in and out of her. Some lubrication between her thighs can make this very pleasurable.

4. If your location has a stairway, the woman can kneel on a stair and support herself with her arms by placing her hands on a higher stair. This changes the angle of penetration and can feel great. It also feels more daring and exciting to get out of a bed and use another area of the house to have sex.

5. Try spooning on your sides, with the woman facing away with her knees bent and the man behind her. This is a relaxing position that a couple can “rest” in while still having penetrative sex. This position makes it convenient and easy for the man to reach around and fondle the woman’s breasts and kiss her neck. She can either keep her legs together or spread her legs to allow deeper penetration.

6. One variation is for the woman to stand and lean over, facing away from her partner as he penetrates her from the back. This can be a great position for the shower!

Possible Issues With the Doggy Position

a. Knee Problems

Sometimes seniors have issues with knee pain. Perhaps it’s painful for the woman to kneel on all fours, or for the man to kneel behind her.

If you have knee problems, try position variations that get you off your knees.

If the woman has knee issues, try the spooning position. Or lay down on your stomach and let the man kneel between or outside your legs.

If the man has knee issues, the woman can get on all fours with her vulva over the edge of the bed. The man can then stand behind her and enter her from the back. Or, the woman can lean over standing, or lean over a table or counter and rest her upper body as the man penetrates her while standing.

b. Too Deep Penetration

Because the Doggy position allows for such deep penetration, it can cause pain. If it’s uncomfortable, ask your partner not to thrust as deeply.

Or, ask your partner to remain still as you thrust backward onto their penis at a depth you are comfortable with. Another option is to lay down on your stomach and put your legs together; this limits the depth of penetration.

Enjoying the Woman From Behind Position

Doggy sex is popular with many people for good reasons. It allows deep penetration, lets a woman feel taken by her partner (or another man if she’s fantasizing), and is pleasurable to both women and men.

Mix things up by doing some Doggy.
